The French Open 2017

Tennis lovers across the country await the next sensational summer of tennis with bated breath and hope that Andy Murray’s 2017 will be as rewarding as 2016.

Before the grass court season in the UK we have the French Open in Paris, the clay court grand slam.

The French Open is, as usual, taking place at Roland-Garros in Paris. From the 22nd May to the 11th June 2017 the best players of the game will take to the show courts, the Suzanne Longlen and Phillipe Chatrier courts, and the outer courts to fight for their places in the next round of the tournament.

The first French Championships were held in 1891, only for French clubs and men. The tournament was located at the Stade Francais Club in Paris. Women were permitted to join in six years later.

It has only been an international tournament since 1925 when the French Tennis Federation opened the competition to all. The Roland-Garros stadium was constructed in 1928.

The competition was hugely popular and although it didn’t take place in the war years, the enthusiasm that the tournament was greeted with on its post war return ensured its place in tennis history.

In 1968 the French grand slam was the first “open” in which amateurs and professionals could compete in the same competition.
